Gauff meets Li in Cincinnati as a favourite priced close to a formality. The question the market appears to have skipped is not who wins, but how long it takes. Gauff has not produced a clean, quick win in weeks.
One grinds, the other takes the ball early
Gauff arrived off a Toronto semifinal on 13 August and opened here with a drawn-out three-setter. Against Samsonova she lost the first set before running out a 6-4 6-1 winner, which is the pattern: slow start, extended resistance, then a level rise. Her second serve remains the leak, with 10 double faults against Day and nine against Bencic.
Li comes in fresher and without expectation, having handled Zhang Shuai convincingly. Her compact, early contact is precisely the ball that has unsettled the Gauff forehand in opening sets, even if her hard-court season also contains defeats to French and Korneeva. The earlier meetings back the read: three games separated them in Surprise, and Berlin reached a second-set tiebreak.
Why a six-game margin is a stretch
To cover a start of five and a half games, Gauff needs a straight-sets win without a single dip, and her tennis is not currently built that way. Every three-set finish cashes, and so do the standard scorelines: 6-4 6-3, 6-3 6-4, 6-2 7-6.
The risk is plain. Once Gauff settles she can shut a set out almost entirely, as she did against Samsonova. That requires her to do it twice, and the accumulated load since Wimbledon argues against it.
