Navarro and Pegula meet again on the quick hard courts of Cincinnati, with the head-to-head reading 3-0 in Pegula's favour. The market has priced her at 1.24 and asks for a winning margin of five clear games. None of their three previous meetings ever came close to that.
The form each of them actually brings
Pegula came through her opening match economically and cleanly, which is the strongest point in her favour. The weeks before it were less tidy: she dropped eight games in a row late in the Washington final, then lost to Shnaider in two flat sets in Toronto.
Navarro's summer on hard courts has been ragged. Korneeva simply outhit her in Toronto, and she handed Cocciaretto a match in Washington with ten double faults. Against Kalinina she hit 15 aces and held almost untroubled, which is the version that keeps second sets competitive.
Where those five games are supposed to come from
For the handicap to land, Pegula needs two one-sided sets, and her recent matches have swung rather than run in a straight line. Navarro's habit is the reverse: a poor start, a level raised afterwards, and in each of the three previous meetings she either took a set or dragged one to a tiebreak.
The risk is plain enough. Her second serve is vulnerable, and a cluster of early breaks would settle the question fast. But a 6-4 6-4 scoreline still pays here, and at this price that cushion is worth taking.
