Two comeback arms frame the opener, but the deeper story begins when they leave. The Detroit Tigers have the cleaner chance to turn a cautious pitching plan into sustained traffic.
Detroit can make patience part of the scouting report
The Tigers return home after showing two different faces in Chicago. Friday brought a spirited comeback led by Hao-Yu Lee and Riley Greene, while the next two games produced little sustained pressure.
River Ryan is scheduled to make his Tigers debut, though this is not a conventional starter’s assignment. Detroit has announced a planned tandem with Keider Montero, and mlb.com reports that Ryan will be recalled for a short major-league look after Tommy John surgery and two hamstring-related IL spells.
His upper-90s fastball and hard slider have returned, but the workload will be watched closely. Montero’s bulk role gives Detroit a defined bridge rather than asking the middle bullpen to improvise from the third inning onward.
At the plate, Detroit can tilt toward right-handed bats if DJ Herz remains Washington’s probable starter. Hao-Yu Lee and Dillon Dingler fit that matchup, while Lee’s recent game-tying homer offers evidence that the young infielder is adjusting rather than merely surviving.
Washington’s first five innings may require several arms
The Washington Nationals arrive after taking two of three in St. Louis, with CJ Abrams, James Wood, Daylen Lile and Jorbit Vivas providing consistent life. Their speed can stretch Comerica Park’s gaps, although recent defensive mistakes have repeatedly given opponents extra outs.
Herz is MLB’s listed probable, but his activation from the 60-day IL had not been formally completed at research time. CBS Sports reported that Washington intended to activate the left-hander and start him Monday.
This would be Herz’s first major-league appearance since Tommy John surgery in April 2025. A later flexor strain interrupted his rehabilitation, and he enters after ten days without game action, making a restrictive pitch count the sensible expectation.
That places the burden on a fluid relief committee. Washington played extra innings Saturday, then watched Yovanny Cruz surrender consecutive decisive home runs while protecting a late lead Sunday; there is no settled closer waiting to tidy the final frame.
Comerica keeps fly balls honest
Cool air, cloud cover and a light in-and-across breeze should limit easy carry at Comerica Park. Its large center-field area and broad gaps reward line drives, speed and clean relay work more than hopeful launch angle.
Passing showers remain possible, and a lengthy delay would be unusually disruptive with both listed starters returning from major injuries. Neither club will be eager to warm up a carefully managed arm twice.
The vulnerable innings sit behind Herz
Detroit does not need to solve every pitch Herz owns. Deep counts, early walks or command rust would shorten an already restricted outing and expose a bullpen carrying mileage from a difficult weekend.
The Tigers also have right-handed options to reduce the advantage of Herz’s changeup. If he is sharp, Detroit still gets multiple chances against a committee without a fixed ninth-inning answer; if his delivery wavers, the scoring opportunity arrives sooner.
The cool weather and Comerica’s dimensions argue against relying on Washington to contribute enough for a full-game Over. Targeting Detroit alone isolates the softer side of the pitching equation without asking Ryan, Montero or an unsettled Tigers bullpen to protect a run line.
Herz’s activation and corresponding roster move were still pending, so a late pitching change is a genuine all-action risk. Ryan is also scheduled for a deliberately short outing, leaving Detroit’s offense little room for a sleepy first trip through the order.
