One match, one door, no replay. Amsterdam Flames and Belfast Wolves have been inseparable all season, and a single afternoon in Dublin now decides who meets Edinburgh Castle Rockers in the inaugural final.
Belfast have the match-ups. Amsterdam have the higher seed. Something has to give, and the runs may be the first casualty.
Amsterdam Flames: several ways to win a game
The Flames finished above Belfast on net run rate off identical records, and they earned it with an attack that can change route without changing personnel. Michael Bracewell has been the middle-overs brake at an economy of 5.64, David Payne takes the new ball, and Bas de Leede has been trusted with the death overs.
Mitchell Marsh is ruled out for the entire season and Scott Edwards remains captain (etplofficial.com). Yuvraj Samra and Steve Smith are projected to open, with Curtis Campher and Tim David carrying the middle, though nothing is settled before the toss.
The warning is fresh: in their last chase Samra, Smith and de Leede all went early, an innings CricketEurope read as Amsterdam being "probably complacent chasing such a modest total".
Belfast Wolves: repair merchants with the angles
Belfast have won both meetings this season, including dismissing Amsterdam for 141 on this ground, with Mark Adair taking 3/25 and Saurabh Netravalkar 2/15. Matthew Humphreys has been used with the new ball, and his arm ball is a serious problem for a right-hand-heavy order.
Mark Chapman is the doubt — he pulled up completing a run against Edinburgh and retired hurt, with no clearance published (cricketeurope.com). Devon Conway is the likeliest straight replacement if he cannot play.
The pattern is a top order that needs rescuing and a lower-middle order that keeps doing the rescuing, with Glenn Maxwell and David Miller the most dangerous late pair in the competition.
A used square and a gusty south-westerly
The whole Irish leg has been staged here, so the square is heavily worn: one strip gripped sharply in the morning, another reportedly turned less later the same day. Only one score above 190 was posted in the entire Irish leg.
Saturday afternoon is forecast breezy and mainly dry with an isolated shower (met.ie), and the wind matters more than the rain. With only one square boundary comfortably clearable, the side defending it can force hitters into the long option at exactly the phase where big aggregates are normally manufactured.
Why 319.5 is a tall order in a knockout
The line is built off the ground's headline tempo of 8.26 and 8.18 runs an over, which clears 320 only if both sides bat their full twenty. Recent innings-pairs here have averaged nearer 285, with chases closed out with four and five overs in hand and two innings folding under 110.
That is the arithmetic that quietly eats totals: a successful chase adds the target plus a couple, a failed one adds much less, and both sides have been bowled out already this season. Scoring at 8.2 an over is lovely; sustaining it for forty overs on a dry strip with Bracewell and Humphreys bowling is a rather different exercise.
The risk is a fresh, flat strip plus a Stirling–Maxwell platform, the short square boundary sitting downwind for the death overs, and Belfast's death bowling being attacked as heavily as it was against Edinburgh — any of those turns 300 into 340 fast.
