One takes the ball early, the other simply refuses to leave
Sawangkaew is the cleaner striker and the shorter-rally player, and she is also the one whose matches keep turning into repair jobs. She dropped the opening set to Stephens with a cluster of double faults, gave away the middle set against Hibino, and lost the finish against Preston and Blinkova after strong starts. In Vancouver and Cincinnati she lost from a set up.
Cabrera arrived here off her best performance in a month: three hours against the world No. 61, the first set in hand and no visible collapse after losing a tiebreak. She wins games by stacking pressure on return, particularly against second serves, which is precisely the shot Sawangkaew struggles to protect under stress.
Where the six games disappear
A -5.5 line asks Sawangkaew for 6-2 6-4 with no interruptions. Her pattern is the opposite: a bad passage, then a run of five games, then another wobble. Even the three head-to-head wins landed near this margin, and Cabrera was in worse shape for all of them.
The risk is physical. If deuce games multiply after that three-hour opener, Cabrera's legs go before her nerve does. The handicap covers part of that scenario, not all of it, and at this price the cushion is still worth taking.
